Dwight,
That's no "funny" idea.  You're right on it.  The concept of overnight success doesn't exist.

The more you write, the better you'll get at writing.  You'll look back at stuff you've written before and see how you can improve it.  Sometimes you'll think, "ARRGGGHH!  Did I actually write that?!"  That's good, though, because it means you've improved so much you can now see the previous mistakes.

Also, when you submit, do NOT let the rejections get you down.  Those nasty things are inevitable.  Usually they're polite, but I politely challenged an editor once on an unfair submission policy and he had the gall to write back and suggest I needed counseling!  Thank God, outright rude rejections are rare.

I've never given birth, either.  I was only comparing the two creative processes.

I recently got this funny idea in my head that if I worked hard for a few years I could be a good writer and maybe even be published. I can only dream of what you must be feeling right now. some day I'll know the anticipation. You have been dreaming of this for a lot longer, except I'm a guy so the giving birth part is a little out of my league

My hopes and prayers are with you and I'll keep watching for the good news.
