When I've been upgraded I never ask why but smile and say thank you
  The 20kg luggage limit is the normal economy limit outside of the US. Sometimes it is worth booking seats for all sectors at the same agent (even if it's not the same carrier) so that they note that you are transferring to an international flight and  make a note of extra luggage.  It can be very tense when best laid plans about cabs don't work out.
P.S. The trouble of course with upgrades is that you get spoilt and notice the difference when it doesn't happen the next flight!

Welcome Back!

Travelling is such fun, no?  Reminds me of the time when I missed my flight back to NY from school in AZ.  And then proceded to lose my bording pass as I was running through Dallas/Ft Worth airport to try and catch my connecting flight.  Regardless...

Be fine,

New Yorker -- !!!
Holy cow!  I'm so sorry to hear all this (except the part where you get upgraded)!  That's not the kind of burden you want to carry over a holiday.  I will be looking to see how it all goes for you.

@clone
Thank you...I hope the wheel of fortune turns my way for the next few months - they are going to be the most crucial. In the meanwhile I'm just resting, enjoying my parents' new home and roaming around New York.

@blackcat

To this day I still don't know what was the rationale behind my being upgraded....maybe it was because I was flying with them for the first time and it was an incentive for me to fly with them again, I don't know....what I did notice is that there were many families sitting in the back, maybe they moved me to keep them all together.

This is the second time that it's happened to me.....last year I wound up flying in Alitalia business class because a guy who was flying in business class swapped seats with me just to be next to his girlfriend, who was sitting in economy. That is true love.
