RckyMtnActivist - determining that you are going to heaven is easy
....even though some of our more fervant Blogit contributors have entry to heaven narrowed down to about 10-12 people in all of history, which of course includes themselves, it is merely a numbers game. If this mythical place exists, it stands to resons that most decent people will eventually end up there. Mind you there may be a few penances to be performed while awaiting entry. I expect that I will be forced to crush several million beer cans on my forehead before ol St. Pete lets me anywhere near the pearly gates.

Good observation
People's attention span is short. After Christmas, consumers' focus shifts from the giving spirit $$ towards spending their tax refund. Marketing agencies make great leaders of the band.

wislon - that's an honest assessment
it does seem easier at Christmas and it is not easy to change our habits.

I'm not a hypocrite
I can afford to show equal good will all year long right now. When you can not afford to give, it makes it real easy to not give any time of the year after all.
More seriously though, part of the whole problem is we are not encouraged to be giving during the rest of the year it seems. There are a few times a year that people get out and do kind things, as society tells them it is acceptable at those times. The rest of the year if society is not telling them to give and care about others, they do not see the need to do so. It is part of that whole idea that you need to be told to do good and not figure it out for yourself.
You know as well as I do that there are a lot of sheep out there who do nothing more than follow and do as they are told.

sannhet and Ariala - thanx for stopping bye
I think we can all add our names to the hypocrite list, myself included. Where we are overwhelmed by an infectious feeling of goodwill at Christmas, and as Damonleigh suggests, maybe even one week is something that we should be grateful for, we do all tend to loose this spirit afterwards. Unfortunately, people are just as needy at other times of the year.

renigade3 -- you've hit on one of the problems that social aid agencies run
into all of the time. There is no helping some people and almost all situations of unsolicited attempts at charity, warrant caution during the approach.

I saw a bum like that last year. I tried to give him some
fruit that I had in the van. "Keep your damn bananas, lady," he screamed at me as I made my offer ( I didn't have any money on me). I pulled back around (naively thinking he might be allergic) and offered him a basket of apples and oranges I had prepared to drop off to an elderly woman. "F*ck your apples and oragnges, too!" he screamed the second time.
As a result, I've decided to hate bums all year round...
Not really...
And btw--My New Year's Resolution is to up my drinking to TWO barrels a day. I think once the vomiting stops I should be okay.

Gome -
Great message! Maybe we should have a Christmas day once each month? Maybe others would continue with their giving throughout the year, rather then just the last month of it. Probably not though.

Alas...
...it seems that many folk try really hard to be 'nice' at Christmas, and don't give it a second thought for the other 51 weeks of the year.
Still, I suppose one week out of 52 is a start, at least!

DrJPT -- Your last line sounds like something I might have said
"I tell them there are a lot of things they could do towards helping others as opposed to sitting in the buildings and attempting to get me straight!! "
Right on, .... I've suggested that they sell the buildings, some of them are on valuable real estate. They think my suggestion is crazy.

Hypocrites!
Your post is awesome! I have essentially this same conversation with my relatives who feel it is important to be in the church building on Sundays and Wednesdays and always hassle me if I am not in attendance. I tell them there are a lot of things they could do towards helping others as opposed to sitting in the buildings and attempting to get me straight!!
