Yes, you can do it...
Without a doubt. For one thing, you know how to talk to corporate types -- you let 'em see that you know what you're doing (like when you told the guy it ain't rocket science) that you can be "in their corner" because you want the job done right. The job being to make money (serving customers is secondary). At least that's management's attitude wherever I've worked. The problem / obstacle / hurdle in your way may be that you have empathy for your fellow workers... But it's hard to be a heartless dick when you've already learned to care about others... :)
