Ok I get your point but at the same time I don't think you get mine.  Come to our country, but come legally and when you are here learn our language.  You don't have to speak English in your homes but learn the language well enough that you don't need an interpreter to know what is happening.  I went to a memorial for my daughters friend  this week and it was all in Spanish and a few of the other childrenin the house don't even understand the Spanish language and may of only knew a few words spoken about their brother.  My daughter knows enough to sneak by, she has never take a day of Spanish in her life, but can pick up a lot of what they are saying.  I was totally lost, but the majority of everyone was there were Spanish speaking.  That is fine in a situation like that.  I am not saying they need to list rare languages spoken but just put it out there to give for other languages to expresssed if chosen..  In our area we also have a lot of Asian people, it all depends on what areas we are reaching people. Now in Los Angeles they too have a lot of different languages.  Just be open for those that do speak another language other then Spanish.

lila,

I remembered commenting here and came back to see if you responded.

I said that I am NOT of Hispanic descent.  I am of English/Eastern European descent.  I do, however, speak Spanish fairly well.  Why?  There are many Spanish speaking people in my part of the U.S., I like to travel in Latin America, and I like to speak a foreign language that is useful.  I will never go to Moscow, there are no Russian speaking people anywhere nearby, and I would be wasting my time, effort, and money in learning that language.

Spanish is more favored by businesses in the U.S. because it is more prevalent.  It is more a question of practicality than of equal treatment of languages.  Safeway stores would be wasting their money to teach employees Greek, but they would be losing money in this part of the country if some their employees did not speak Spanish.

It is not possible to force people, already at an educational disadvantage, to suddenly speak English.  To keep people who do not speak English out of the country not only creates hostility, it is to practice discrimination.  One of the United States of America's greatest, and most worthy, points of pride is that the nation is the ''Great Melting Pot'' of nations.  Should we abandon one of our greatest national prides to satisfy those already here who are offended by some particular ''foreign language?'

Language has, throughout history, been a point of discrimination in any border areas of any part of the world.  Is that good?  I don't think so.  Nor do I think it is good that Anglo-Amercans take offense with the French for taking offense with them for not speaking French.  Who is right there?

I don't mean to offend you with my contention, but the problem is not with people speaking different languages, it is with people failing to accept differences among people.

No it wasn't a question about that it is why everything is focused around just Spanish, my company has customer service for these languages also:  Tagalog, Korean, Vaitemes, Spanish, and others.  I am just pointing out if you are in the US then speak English, no matter your background.  Obviously you say you are Hispanic and I am sure you speak English. My family came from Sweden  hundreds of years ago and they spoke English.  My daughter doesn't have a white friend amongst her but they all speak English and some came directly from Mexico

lila,

Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the world and the U.S. is in the middle of a region of the world where Spanish is more widely spoken than anywhere else in the world.  The Latin American countries make a very wide use of the Internet.  Microsoft has a very deep involvement in the Internet in Spanish speaking countries.  They even have a Spanish website.  Blogit would be making a big mistake if they did not become involved in the Spanish language.  Not only would they be ignoring potential financial benefits, but they would give rise to cries of discrimination against the Spanish speaking population, not only of the U.S., but of an entire part of the world.  The United States is far from the only country that uses the World Wide Web.

Does that answer your question?
If you are wondering, I am not of Hispanic descent.
