Oh this one will come back Factor.
He's just being his usual irresponsible self.  I hate that too coming away from a book unsatisfied. I finished this book just a couple of days ago where the character had up and left his wife for 20 years and then reappeared. As much as he needed to find himself, I couldn't for the life of me understand what had happened and still I don't know why he left in the first place.

So long as you have your character reappear at some point.
I have hated reading a "really good book" racing to the end because I want to know how on earth this turns out, only to find that the writer had no idea either and just left things unexplained. Grrr, still annoys me to have wasted my time on certain "books." Anyone could write a book if the plot could just hang in limbo after they write themselves into a corner...

True Tapsel,

..And then there are those you have to coax to shake something loose.

Tiel,
I'm glad they're in cooperation mode. There are days when they take holiday and nothing will make them settle down to work.

Something similar happens on television, word.  When a central character on, say, CSI, gets shot and killed, Ell and I have a habit of saying "Oh they must have been offered a better role."

Interesting post, word.smith.   It is funny how some characters just lead you along.

Word
That seems to be what most successful writers say.  "Listen to your characters."  Glad yours are talking!
