How about this:
I should be modest because God would want me to be so!
Actually the Bible has some words on the subject. It says that if you are fasting for religious reasons, do not let yourself look like you are fasting; wash your face and comb your hair and otherwise take care of yourself so that you are not showing off your sacrifice.
As you suggest, we are not supposed to brag about our deeds in God's name, just to do them and let that be its own reward.
And good works are good whether done by religious people or atheists or whoever. I wholeheartedly share your "Golden Rule" logic. Solid stuff, blogging friend!

kooka_lives -- I couldn't agree more with the points you make in this post
We've seen it all here on Blogit. From those who manufactured good deeds to convince us they were saints to those who would utilize their good deeds as a weapon to bludgeon the rest of us into a state of shame. The truth of the matter is that one individual can only do so much. Our first responsibilities are to our families and our own well being. Helping others must be an extension of the fullfillment of these responsibilities. We also cannot ignore that different individuals possess different talents. Different people help in different ways.
