Xeno-x -- good ol Tammy Faye -- and her tears were sincere
She cried when the money was pouring in from her hubby's TV evangelism, she was a slobbering wreck when he got caught stealing the money from the Christian theme park and she blubbered like a baby when they carted him off to prison. Yet there are still people in this world that support both of them and refuse to believe what their own eyes have shown them.

Talion - that's a very important point
If anything put the Christina revivalist movement on adrenaline, it was a war declared on the west by another religion. We mouth the words that the war on terror is not a holy war but that's a joke really, when those who have declared the war are compelled almost entirely by their religion. Where our societies do not think and act the same way, these acts of agression towards us, have as you say, created an uncertainty that has polarized our populaces towards religion. Definately acting as fuel.

Another thing that feeds the revival flames is fear and uncertainty about the near future. Without a rational explanation for unfortunate events, people turn to religion for answers and comfort. The Puritans and their witch hunts is a prime example. I'm sure the tragic events of 9-11 are having an impact on the fervor we see today, especially since it provides the perfect villains, Muslims.

I don't know enough to even venture at a comment here, so I will only say
that I read and found your thoughts to be quite rational.

well tammy faye cried
and so did Jerry Lee Lewis' cousin -- who was that?
big ol' tears too.
but hardly any of the others give us nary an apology.
only political apologies
the only one out there that i would give any credit to is Billy Graham -- he hasn't led people astray as far as I can tell
the others? . . . -- they're perfectly right, you know.
if you're right you don't need to apologize.
and Christianos (new word -- means the ultra type of Christian like those who populate Blogit) I haven't met one who knows how to apoplogize -- like our president -- and I've known several personally.
