PatB, I actually wish I had it in me to write romance
It would be less intensive than non-fiction and I could make it up as I go

rr2hsam, I agree that competition improves things
although sometimes people put the competition ahead of the quality

LaylaBeth, thanks.
I couldn't quite believe it that two agents were interested

But now I have to take advantage of that fact

There are only 7 basic plots in the universe anyway, right? Perhaps that other book is a "blessing in disguise: (cliche) because you are reworking your book and making it even better. YOU HAVE AN AGENT!!!!

Well, the saying goes:
"there is nothing new under the sun."  So, I say, FULL SPEED AHEAD!!!  And go ahead and say it again:  "my agent."  Yep--that does sound cool, lol!!!  ~LB~ xo

I agree with Pat B

If there's someone else writing on similar topic, I suspect that it's an interesting enough topic for you to proceed. Also, I'd look at it as an opportunity to spice your book up a bit...A friendly competition to keep you fresh and on your toes!

MayB I don't visit you that often because you actually are working regularly in the world of writing and publishing.  Maybe my deepest feelings that I can hardly articulate are so counter-productive in the real world, that I want everyone who is successful to fail, and the whole house to fall down, perhaps so that I can justify the inertia which has become a lifestyle.  Though an oversimplification, consider a frightened little antelope, standing in the cover of brush and trees a hundred feet or so from a water hole, and being very thirsty but fearing enough the predators who regularly gather there, to avoid and avoid the decision to go down and drink.  Oh, those lions!  Oh, Oh, those crocodiles!  But you work to make your way in that world, and I salute you.

Similar topic? So what?
Ever seen a "different" romance novel?  And they still sell thousands (millions?) of 'em every year.  I like your writing & want to buy your book when it comes out...  With any luck, maybe I'll even get a signed copy. :)

Not only are you on YOUR agent's radar, she is concerned about you.

Good for you! All of the extra work will produce a better book!

Thank you I will. The agent is keen enough but she is aware that publishers are less keen when there are other recent books in circulation

Frankenkitty. I don't think I'm could do a thing about . ...
the hood ;-).

Publishers don't like to see too many books about the same topic at the same time.

If the subject means a lot to you, I would not lose faith in it
MayB -- I think you should keep plugging away at it. I'm sure that whatever the topic is you can find a unique spin to it and write from a perspective that is distinctive to your style and experiences. If your agent will not market the book to publishers that does not mean that you cannot continue to circulate it on your own. No subject is ever completely exhausted.

BrightIrish, eventually I'll say more about it. Thank you. The issue about similar subjects is that publishers may not be interested if there are too many other similar books around.

I will also be interested in knowing what your book is about. It surprises me that similar subjects would be a issue.

I didn't realize similar topics
was such a big deal.  Especially when you have clusters of movies based on Vampires, Motorcycles, or Such and Such- in the Hood.  I bet your book will be great, as long as it's not, Such and Such in the Hood.  Take care MayB
