Sorry for the delay babe_rocks!!
I am pretty sure the "thorn apple" is a form of hawthorne. I don't know if all the varieties are edible though. The mayhaw fruit looks like an apple though so it may be good to eat.

On the property where I live (in northern MN) my dad once pointed out to me what he called a "thorn apple". It had small red fruits like apples. I wonder if it still there or another like it and if so would the fruits be the same and edible?

A mayhaw tree is a form of a hawthorne tree. The fruits look like small apples and are used to make wine, jellies and jams, honey, and other edible delights. The trees late in the year and the fruit is picked in late April and May for the most part. The native mayhaws grow in boggy areas, but varities have been bred for drier ground. Our place is a little piece of paradise for us. I will have to write about the way it looks some time. Thanks for the read and the comment.
