- Go to I READ A BOOK
Factor & Fiona,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. At the rate I'm going, I'll have to start reading books twice. Once to pick them apart and the second time for enjoyment.

That's the worst thing about studying a craft
The magic is lessened. I also look at books differently now that I've been reading up on writing skills. Same thing when I started learning to paint. Needless to say, I have no intention of going into acting because I want some magic to remain.

I used to have a really tough time reading things
that other people wrote. I knew my grammar and spelling absolutely perfectly and I could not read without picking paragraphs apart. (...redundant...run on sentence...that word does not mean that....blah blah blah) Then I went into engineering and now everyone's writing is so much better. I was forced to abandon all of those pesky little rules in favor of content. Too bad, I would have made a great editor!

I have a great deal to learn about writing, but I AM a discerning and picky reader. It annoys me to read a book where to me it is obvious that the writer has gotten lazy. I'll forgive while the plot is good and has me hooked, but I may complain about the laziness afterward.

Word.smith,
LOL. I've heard the quote "Beware the man who's read one book" (I have to look up the source, sorry), but maybe there should be a corollary: "Beware the writer who only knows one word!"

:) I do that too and I try to learn from those guys.
I overwork the same word all the time and I find it real challenging to search different words. Inspiring post, again.

Hey John,
Hmmm....or it could be because the all that kissing had a hint of paradise postponed.

Thanks MayB,
I hadn't even thought about this in terms of what not to do and yes, I'm seeing how wise you are in choosing to read material that provides inspiration.

Very true Ginnie...
It's truly humbling to read a good book and know I'm just starting to scratch the surface of what there is to learn.

By reading books uou can learn as much about how not to write as about about how to write. I always hope that precious reading time can be given to reading writing that inspires me

LOL word!
I read books that way too. It drives me nuts when the author uses a word over and over and usually uncommon ones, as you say. Of course there are also many many books I read and wonder how I could ever actually call myself a writer!
