Merry Christmas anyway!
And I dont see how not being "actual" Christians, prevents one from getting into the spirit of Christmas, which is very human in its essence, after all.

Oh. And Jesus was a minimalist cross-dresser, you know. As a critic, it
did nothing for me. He only had on a loincloth. And he accessorized with that ugly crown of thorns. So gauche.

Agreed. On all counts. I tell people that I don't understand the
significance of buying women roses and candy on February the 14th to celebrate a gangland massacre. You wouldn't believe some of the looks I get. Then again, given your article, maybe you would. And you are absolutely right in positing that this nation is going out of its way to be offended or be offended for someone (or something). I don't give a damn what you celebrate, but I sure as hell don't think it a social catastrophe that needs legislation just because someone says "Christmas" or "Channukah" or "Ramadan". (I also don't understand the flip-side blow-up about saying "holidays". Christians need to get over themselves. Still, there shouldn't be a ban or policy against saying "Christmas".)

Wordsmith
Linguist,
When I first saw your name I thought perhaps that you were a testosterone crazed internet stalker. After reading you bio, I was convinced that I was right. Now that I have read your work and I find that you are an accomplished writer and artful wordsmith. Thank you for your contributions. I will visit often. I hope you will follow my blog about Miriam. Perhaps your question will be answered.

I'm just fatigued
about the topic. Every kwanzaa, honukah, christmas whatever, people bring up this tired debate. At least you have the decency to be clever about it

. Funny title too.

Cunning...I've seen so much discussion of this on the news. What
I find humorous is that those very people who are offended by the word Christmas, well, do you think they go complain to their employer when they're forced to take this holiday off, WITH PAY? I'm guessing, not!
Maybe we should quit worry about offending people and just keep offending them. Then maybe they'll go away. Maybe they'll claim some island somewhere and start making up their own rules, holidays, and sayings.
MASKY LOVES JESUS CHRIST, because even though I sin and fall short of my fullest spiritual potential, he loves me none the less. His dad is pretty cool, too!
GOD BLESS AMERICA. AMEN. PRAISE JESUS, FOR HE IS LORD. AND MERRY CHRIST-MAS.

Next you're going to tell me there's no Wester Bunny either. My God man, haven't you been visited by the generous Bunny? He comes (a lot) once a year to bestow candy upon the candy deprived and....wait, here comes the nurse with my multi-colored pills, so pretty....she is the Easter Bunny! Fade to multicolors..............

Cunninglinguist,
Hallelujah! (Oh, wait I can't say that anymore, oh no!) But I salute your wit and wisdom on the subject of Christmas. I happen to be a fan myself.. As for Happy Holidays discussion, I just shake my head and think, like you said, "Priorities". We have a bazillion dollar consumer deficit, we are at war, and the war is "off the books", eg, the $4 billion a day that we're racking up in Iraq and Afghanistan isn't even figured into the budget, and the only thing that gets the pols riled up is "Happy Holidays?" Happy Holidays yourself! Get us out of this mess!
I'll be a card-carrying member of P.O.O.P. myself, and carry a spare POOPER scooper!

Yeah, I'm kind of with you on this one. I like the term "happy holidays" as a way to be all-inclusive, but not as a means of not offending anyone. I may not necessarily be a Christian, but Christmas doesn't offend me at all. I celebrate and admire the spirit of it. Just as I do other holidays. But really, I think everyone should accommodate me and join me in erecting a pole and celebrating Festivus.

Every year this PC crap gets worse
Now in school they don't have Halloween parties, they now celebrate the "harvest" and Christmas of course is totally screwed with this holiday shit. To the Jewish people I wish them a Happy Hanukkah, to my black friends Kwanza and to all other Merry Christmas and have a good night or kiss my ass.

Jojo!
Okay, so St. Boniface came across some pagans worshiping an oak tree in Germany about a thousand years ago. For some reason, this pissed Boni off, so he cut down the tree, but supposedly a new fir tree sprung up from the other tree's roots. Boniface took this to be a sign of the Christian faith. Eventually, in the 16th century, people started putting trees in the house at Christmastime. Yeah -- I don't get it either.
Frankly, though, there's a lot of religious tradition I don't understand - in all faiths. But what Christmas started out being and what it is aren't necessarily the same thing; much like most people who celebrate Halloween aren't thinking about its origins, they're having a good time by dressing in costumes and getting some free candy.

People do tend to go overboard with the PC stuff. As a non christian though I've never understood what a tree has to do with Christmas. I do understand what it has to do with winter solistice though.
