Kooka, et al
I understand what it is like to be in situations like that.  Indeed as stated earlier, there is a time and a place for a religious discussion and the Thanksgiving dinner table is not one of them (a bit ironic really, displaying intolerance and ignorance when we should be giving thanks and show tolerance).  What I have done in the past is to let it slide for the moment, and then approach them and try to have a dialogue with them in a proper setting at a later juncture.

kooka_lives - I have endured this sort of thing over the years from the

in laws. I put up with it at first, just letting them spew their remarks, changing the subject and moving on, all to keep whatever social gathering we were involved in, harmonious, much like you had done in the instance you describe in this post. But one day they crossed the line. I had endured enough and had listened to the foretelling of my eternal damnation one too many times, so I booted them all out of the house. Unfortunately they slowly began coming back to make further attempts to have me support their collective delusion. Then a cycle began, a few of them would make excuses to include me in their social gatherings, with some get togethers a part of the natural extension of being related. Almost every time they began spraying me with Jesus juice, I would tell them to get lost, they would be deeply offended and stay away for awhile, then come back to start the cycle all over again. My point is that I can't tell you which is an easier route to take. Speaking up and bonking them on the head has it's rewards but also has it's inherent grief and difficulties. I wonder how things would have been if I just kept my mouth shut as I had for so many years.

Recently I asked one of them why he was such an insufferable bible thumper when in my company. (my exact words)...his answer was "Jesus died wearing a crown of thorns, my minor discomfort from your attacks on his holy name, pale by comparison" ....hoo boy, not once did I ever bring the subject of religion up with these people, they have initiated absolutely every last incident with their obtuseness and a complete lack of respect for my differing viewpoint. Yet I am the one on the attack?......sound familiar?

Hello
such an inappropriate thing to say in such a setting. There is a time and place to have such conversations.
