You are correct that I never said you said there was no God; in fact, if there really were no God, we're wasting perfectly good time and energy discussing nothing.

However, if you are correct that all we really needed to do was "do unto others as we'd have them do to us," surely communism would work, would it not? After all, the State would be in charge of making sure that those who have [extra] would give to those who don't have as much (I'm sure you've heard it before: "From those according to their abilities, to those according to their needs.")

And I'm not so sure that the "Golden Rule" is necessarily espoused in every major religion. The reason why I say this is because every other major religion -- including Judaism -- is very much of a "works-based" religion. This is completely foreign to Christianity.

You can read more, if you perfer, on my blog -- I'm going to post now.

why the precepts of love and such?

do unto others?

well -- if everyone were to live by those precepts, then we would have no more wars, no poverty, no hunger -- none of the things that humans inflict upon themselves.

this is good for everyone.

these precepts are universal -- the golden rule is a rule of all the major religions.

then that begs a questoin doesn't it?

can you guess what that question is?

i didn't say there was no god.

but I do challenge the usual idea of a god.

when god is something, then that god is an idol

when one loses all conception of a god, then one sees true.

Here's something to think about:

Why do you think? Can you point to your mind?

If there is no God, why love your neighbor as yourself? What is that going to get you? Positive endorphines? Why not kill your neighbor instead? Some people get off on being "bad" instead of being "good".

Speaking of which, what is "good" and "bad" and how do you know? Don't say, "Society," because "society" is made up of "individuals," and that gets really circular really quickly.

Do you feel the need to "get beyond yourself" at times? Ever wonder why that is?
