Good suggestions here, word.smith. I try to watch for that when I go over my writing. It is amazing what you can cut out.

This is harder than it looks.
Does anyone else TRY to use extra words (or fewer words) to help the sound and "beat" of a sentence? Sometimes it works, but I have noticed in reading things that I have done, once they've cooled ---it didn't turn into no cherry pie. Word, very good advice. Almost always, sparse language comes out best. And another thing I like: "Listen with big words, speak with small words."

Word-So true! we tend to write fast without editing. This is one way to check our work.

word.smith, I would add that you should be wary of removing "that" from your work. It is often best to leave "that" in.
