I think it's called "Memory". Was it from Cats? I know we learned it at school. I still can't believe I recognised the song. (I may have got the source and title wrong but I recognised the song)

I've never gotten the David Letterman version of this out of my mind
I always knew the song and saw the play a long time ago. One night, on his show, Letterman started singing to the melody
Midnight
And the Kitties are sleeping...he improved a good bit from there.
