kushie--
A stomach and a gizzard are not the same thing. The gizzard uses pebbles or stones the bird picks up, to grind the food and assist with digestion, since birds don't have teeth. Traveling through oblivion is akin to going beyond eternity. As for the other stuff, English is a complex and fascinating language.

Yes, and I wonder about fruits
Why do they have two fruits with the word "grape" in 'em? Grapefruit and plain old grapes. Same with apples and pineapples. The pineapple is worthy of its own distinct name. Why are raisins not called elderly grapes? Another thing: how come the orange is named after its color? Absolutely no thought went into naming the orange. Some lazy bastard was in charge of naming things that day.

Love this post!
Great idea, Kushie. I can tell you from experience, you will make yourself crazy getting into this stuff. Been there. I love your spooner and picker. I'm not sure about the origin of ice cream, but I think it must have been "iced" cream. The best stuff, and the handmade stuff, are actually made from cream (or where before synthetic substances became so popular), hence the cream label. When I was a kid, we had something called Ice Milk that was lighter with less calories than ice cream. Now, I think they just call it "Lite." At least, I haven't seen ice milk in a long time.
Another word for sofa/couch when I was growing up (in Wisconsin) was davenport. I had a friend in New Mexico who said she visited some people in Wisconsin once, and when they told her she could sleep on the davenport, she thought they meant the outdoor porch! Let's not forget divan, either. I plan to read as many of your posts as I can. Great thoughts and writing.
