Great post, yes I wish bluntly speaking Teddy was still around to whip a few folk into shape with the lash of his tongue.  This German-English-Irish-Scottish-who-knows-what-else-mutt is one who would prefer to be known simply as an American.  Proud of it, wouldn't change it for anything, no matter what some of our European friends think of us.

I think we have to look at Ellis Island and the poem on

the plaque of the Statue of Liberty, "The Great Colossus" and the following words "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I agree...
I think my biggest frustration is calling a government office, having to press 1 for English...that should be a given.  Plus, I can't really hyphenate...European Mutt is the best I can figure.  I'm sure so many are agreeing whether they admit it or not.

Teddy, where are you when we need you?

Also to add to yesterday's 'Clinton' post.  Then there's Carter, who is making speeches calling Bush the worst president of all time.  Carter of the many debaucles including the "killer rabbit."  Carter with the all-time low approval rate of 28%.

Corbin thanks. Actually I see typos in my comment. I meant to say
"to hell w/it."  Also, I am not against preserving ethnic identities, I'm just not into draggin that stuff into the work place...unless you own a pizza place or a tartan shop...or sell turquois jewelry in the southwest desert...how many more people do you think I can offend ;-)

Corbin, I work in a highly corporate environment where I absolutley

refuse to use hyphenated Americanism.  I watch people squirm when they say the words because most people resort to hyphens when they are saying something not flattering.  I shoot straight and if some group gets offended to with w/ it.  We're Americans, not egg-shell-walking-Americans-preserving ethnic identities.

regarding the Teddy Roosevelt quote
you didn't give us a date for that speech or paper.

speaking of WWII
U.S. had a lot of Nazi sympathizers -- clear up until war was declared.
U.S. businesses made profits off of selling armaments to both sides.
just like in WWI
just like in Iraq
so American boys were killed by weapons that had MADE IN THE USA stamped on them.
but that's an aside.
think
Hitler virtually conquered Europe and much of North Africa and the Middle East -- it took Pearl Harbor for us to get in gear.
We stayed isolationist until that time.

a lot of Italians and other Europeans
lost their names and h eritage because of that.
became Smith and Jones and such --
if our immigration officers couldn't pronounce the name, they gave them new names.
yes why doesn't every just forget their heritage
no more Columbus Day
no more St. Patrick's Day.
problem is
the only true Americans are kept on reservations now.
everybody else is from other continents.
the other problem with this is the way the "americans", as they might be called -- that is, those who are of European origins, manly Western European, whose forebears came over here about a century and a half or more ago -- how those seem to place those that you don't seem to want to consider as "hypenated" in a second class status.
so we're not hyphenated americans -- we are a caste system.

Just a point of clarification......I never said you were French,  from your profile, one can conclude that's where you now live.....

..."most of your people over there". The only thing generalisations have in common is that they're all wrong.

I believe that is in a statement referring to "Europe" and in spite of their desires to be otherwise....France is still a part of Europe.

I wonder if you've ever been outside of the States? If so, you're in a minority and YOU clearly haven't learned much.

Oh, I been outside of the states and learned a hell of a lot.....the envy of Europeans is the only thing larger than their egos......Lord knows why?

And did I detect a little reference to WWII, when America kept her head down for the first couple of years, and didn't get involved until Japan forced her hand? All this galloping-to-the-rescue bullshit is pure revisionist fiction.

Ahhhhhh....the revisionist tactic........no problem, we've never asked anyone to say thanks.

You have a good day, too.

And there's nothing wrong with that.....but you don't just speak Swedish here, do you?  Pride in where you came from is quite different from refusing to let go of any of the old ways, and being assimilated into the overall culture.

Really???

And you didn't learn a thing...did you?

France is the perfect example of what Teddy was talking about and unfortunately the direction that the secular left in America is trying to steer her towards.........

Frankly, Europe is the last role model we need.......for a group of countries with so many centuries of history, one would have thought you would have gained something from those experiences........something beside the smugness and condescending attitude your media, leadership, and most of your people over there exhibit.

That is until your next continent-wide crisis...........then you'll come, hat in hand, tail tucked between your legs, to get help from those lousy, immature bunch of American cowboys.........

And like always......we will have already been preparing that help when you come and ask.

It's Perfectly...
...understandable for one of the youngest nations on Earth getting it's panties all bunched up over immigration when, a handful of short centuries ago, the USA didn't exist and immigrants were the minority.

The rest of the world is starting to get used to seeing America in it's foot-stomping teenage years, going through the usual testosterone rushes and identity crisis.

It's nothing to be embarassed about. You'll all get over it one day. The rest of us have.
