They are not getting rid of them, they are letting them die. I needed one the other day.
One took my money and gave me no dial tone. Another down the road had something jammed in the coin slot. The next one had a broken wire from the actual phone to the box. Seven phones later, I gave up and a wonderful woman loaned me her cell phone.
They no longer belong to the phone company and are rented out to individuals who give up on them as a source of revenue, as angry customers appear to rip them apart in frustration. Repair costs are too high and too frequent.

I don't think they'll get rid of them. I still see people using them all the time.
