Hi, i really feel jealous of you you have so much fun all the time! Just kidding ! I love kids party but it should not be for more than two hours coz after that you really cant control them.Have a nice time.

You are a very creative person. You will think of some really good ways to make this happen. Put everything breakable up very high. LOL Have fun. This will be a birthday she will never forget. I think two hours is totally long enough, I don't know what the fashion is but at my age now any party is too long if over two hours. LOL BB

Symphony, it only hurts for a little while....

and then they all go home.   Just let the good times roll,  Sweetie, kids are kids.

My daughter just had one for her daughter who turned 11.   It won't hurt too bad.  Have fun. hahaha

Symphony - I'd say two hours - three hours max - and no more children at the party than her age... that rule is quite handy. I will reply to your question soon - sorry it's been hectic;-)

posted by Azur on November 12, 2005 at 11:17 PM | link to this | reply

I'd keep it as simple as possible. Maybe have a theme - like a "pink" party - where everything is pink. Make sure you have some adult support too just to keep yourself sane!

posted by Ca88andra on November 12, 2005 at 10:54 PM | link to this | reply

Don't sweat it, Symph. You'll be fine.
Just make some "goodie bags" with candy and toys for all the kids to take home. Just think back to when you were a kid and the stuff you did at b-day parties. Pin the tail on the donkey, that orange game where you have to stand in a circle and pass the orange with your neck to the next kid, etc. I'd say no more than 4 hours is sufficiant. It'll be fine!

Symphony,
I don't have anything to add, but I learned a lot just reading the comments.  The crafts idea sounds perfect for little girls. I did volunteer for a while with the church girl's group, the main coordinator pretty much set it up that way, too: food, crafts, gifts, home.  Have fun.

THANK YOU, Thankyou, thankyou

yes, I've done kids parties before and I am too cheap to do them at a party place, so they have always been in the home... sorry, can't get to London to help, but I will have my fingers crossed for you on the party day

just remember to keep it short and sweet!

There are so much good advice here. I suggest a morning party so that they are gone by lunchtime. You have to be very strict about that otherwise its babysitting for the whole day. There may be adults who insist on staying because they don't want to make the extra trip home. That could deplete your food a lot.

Kids parties
Have games planned, buy hats, napkins, plates everything to match. Give away prizes.  ahve enough stuff planned for about two hours max. And make sue everyone knows you are not a babysitter for the day two hours means two hours. I have two adult children and that's what I do for them.

Homegirl has it right

Symph, I made the mistake of having a 5 hour party for my son when he was 8. Ten boys in my house for 5 hours I almost went bonkers !!

One thing to be ready for is your daughter's excitement (aka stress). My daughter used to get SO excited about the party, planning it, decorating, all the fun stuff, that mid-way through she was exhausted and crabby. I learned to make sure she had lots of rest in the days leading up to the party with not too many other activities. A lunch party seemed to work best too so that the guests were gone by 3. Having the party start late afternoon didn't work as well as she was up at the crack of dawn and exhausted by the time her guests arrived.

Have fun Symph, don't forget the wine for Mom when everyone has gone home

I want Homegirl to come do a party at my house

posted by Bel_ on November 12, 2005 at 8:04 AM | link to this | reply

SYMPHONY, good questions you ask.  Homegirl sounds like she knows the answers.  I had lots of birthday parties for my kids but they were all boys.   The thing they loved the most was a treasure hunt each time.  This is best during the months that they can be outdoors.  An indoor treasure hunt is fun but can turn the house upsidedown if it gets too exciting.

You may have already blown one of the rules for an in home party, but

here is my list:

1.  the number of children present are equal to the childs age.  (child turning 10, 10 friends)

2. 2 hour party.

3.  Do a simple time-eating craft:  Cover your dining table with craft paper, and paint glasses or ceramic mugs, or start some mini scrapbooks.  I use orientaltrading.com to find crafts, but that is a US store.

4.  Time breakdown is:  30 minutes arival with a short cartoon movie or music playing.  1 hour craft or series of games 30 minutes food (hor devours or delivered pizza) followed by cake.  30 minutes opening presents and parents should start ariving at this time to take home thier angels!  (the party may run 2-1/2 hours to 3 ho urs, but if you don't set a strict schedule, it will run longer.

5.  Keep it simple, and follow a simple theme.  Make or order the cake, make goodie bags that coordinate, put up very simple decorations... remember you will have to clean when you are done.... ps. only decorate 1 room with the crafts and cake will happen... they will get the picture.  The easiest decor I have ever done is to fill one room with helium  balloons with strings almost long enough for them to reach.. when they leave, they can take the balloons with them... you might even be able to get small gifts and cany in these balloons.

6.  recruit help, and find a creative way to get the kids attention when you need it so you won't lose your voice... I always lose my voice!

Hey, Symphony....How about a Barbie Doll cake?
My cousin once had a cake like that, and all the little girls loved it. I don't have kids but how about a pinata to hang. You blindfold them and let them try and break it open with a stick, be careful there, and candy comes out, etc....Just have plenty of ice cream, soda, chips....Can you rent a magician or cheap clown...lol....It sounds like fun, though...Musical chairs? Good luck....
