Will Star trek become a religion?

cantey_1975 - in answer to your last question - of course it is foolishness
to grieve if one is a believer. In using a belief in an afterlife as rational, people should be happy for others when they die or at least limit their own grief to the equivalent of saying goodbye to someone for awhile. There should be no difference between a death and someone moving across the country, if one truly believes that we go somewhere after this life but instead we see untold grief from the deaths of loved ones.

Yes

Star Trek, Doctor Who, Star WARS all provide a hopeful glimpse through the pleasurable genre of science fiction of what we are groaningly capable of.

SPACE TRAVEL.

Which in my opinion is what our species would have to master if we lived in a deathless and harmonious society.

if death is a natural part of life, why is there pain afforded and distributed as a result to those attached to the departed.

This pain. Where does it come from and why? Is it foolishness to grieve?

Mandalee
So far from what I have seen in my life fiction generally is our greatest way of expressing the truths about the universe. Religion does a piss poor job by comparison. I think partial because it is fiction pretending to be fact.

Fiction that is outright fiction is more truthful about life than religious ideas, which are fiction claiming to be truth.

Ah, how I loved Star Trek, but as much as I respect the ideals of the Prime Directive, I think that many people would definitely have trouble living up to it.  The directive was idealistic and the people of Star Trek were, in general, I think a little closer to perfection than most of humanity here on planet earth.

MandaLee - it isn't a question of respect for another's beliefs
but more chronicling the realities of the prolific failure of a portion of society that would advance a set of religious beliefs as the solution to the problems our species faces. You believe that the bible is true, I believe that the only truth found in it are the spattering of references to actual historic events. Which unfortunately and wishful thinking aside, do not make the rest of the document true. The Star Trek series were fictional as are the ideals outlined in the Prime Directive but no more fictional than the delusion that the bible holds answers for all of mankind. The key phrase being "all of mankind" and not just those who are able to subscribe to it.

Star Trek is fictional. Many believe as I do, that the Bible is true.
Gome, I respect your beliefs.  Please respect mine.

kooka_lives -- that's my number one beef with Christianity
The doomsday scenario is somehow a glorious thing? The scary part being that we have seen some severely screwed up individuals who buy into this nonsense in a wholesale fashion. It is not outside of the realm of possibility to have one of these chuckleheads attain a position of power that would allow them to advance or even bring about the end of the world. As we speak there is a born again Christian in charge of the world's largest nuclear arsenal.....we should all be very afraid.

Makes sense to me
But I do not see religious fundamentals as wanting to progress or really wanting a better future. They just want to convert everyone to their way of thinking and then have the end of the world come. Rather depressing really.

If all you are looking forwards to the end of the world, then way care about the future at all? Wow, I think I just came up with a great title for a post.
