Holy gadzooks!
I wrote something about pay toilets a while ago.  I thought they were a thing of the past.  How humiliating.

Foreign owned dept store?

Paying to go potty?  I thought that was just a European thing.  I remember being abroad as a child and having to pay for 2 sheets of toilet paper and it was like rubbing with sandpaper.  I remember thinking it was the most ridiculous custom ever and that I couldn't wait to go back to the states.  It's amazing how we take the little things for granted and just expect certain luxuries to always be there.

When I was young, pay toilets were everywhere.   Most places though, like big department stores, had a whole string of pay toilets and at the end one lonely free one.  Of course, if you didn't have a dime you stood in a long line for a toilet that needed cleaning badly.

Jeff,
I remember having to use pay toilets when I was younger and I remember what someone scratched onto the wall of one: "Here I sit broken hearted. Paid a quarter, only farted." I think pay toilets should be illegal and I haven't seen any for a long time. Cute blog.

Two cents' worth about your lost dime...
The poor schlep who had to clean that bathroom probably wished he had access to your head to use for a bowl-cleaning brush....:)   I thought for a minute you were just going to put a few towels between the latch and the door so the next guy would have free access... oh, well.  :)

I think pay toilets are illegal
in a lot of places now but I used to see them now and then in the 70s and early 80s
