Talion, I avoided it for years with the same prejudices. I've just about
had my fill of adolecent lit.  But this is interesting.  Thanks for reading and commenting.

Jo, Yes I agree with you. The HP craze is a simple story, w/magic, setting
good versus evil.  Also, you take an underdog character like HP whose family despises him, and give him supernatural powers, like superman, and we associate with that.  Then you use as motif and subtext all things from nature like Shakespeare did -- storms, insects, animals (horses that can fly, now that's capture a kids imagination).  Much of it is from Greek mythology mixed with gothic lore.

I want to write children's comics

I think it is important to read stuff that has taken the kids imagination enough to get the kids who hate reading - reading?

I intentionally avoid the Harry Potter books, refusing to jump on the bandwagon. There's something about adults clamoring over novels aimed at children that disturbs me, present company excluded of course. My best friend, also a teacher, in San Antonio, has read the books so he could use them in the classroom, tells me they're actually pretty good. He was visiting me when the latest novel hit the stands and insisted we make a trip to a bookstore so he could pick up a copy. I was almost tempted to buy one for myself. Almost.
