I don't know if that matters much. . , UNLESS the story has been told a bazillion times. The author's tone and style plays into part of the equation.

In my letter to the editor/publisher I wrote that I knew there were r similar books out there but none of them were by me, or had my point of view - or sense of humour. That is what it amounts to. I've read thousands of mystery books and lots of them have the same plot - some of them I disliked - others I'd read again.

Do you really believe that there are a finite number of ideas in the universe?

Further proof that my theory is correct--that there are only a finite number of ideas in the universe library, and sometimes, someone else checks it out before we do!!

MayB, with so many writers in this world, that must happen often.

Mmmmm.....
But what is true is that no matter how many of the 'same' ideas we have, we all manage to put a little of our personality on it, making them that much more interesting and unique in their own way.

Didn't someone once say there are a finite amount of ideas in this world (or maybe I'm thinking of musical notes)? So, it means that our ideas for books will never be unique, somewhere, someone will have already written about it, but in a different way.

MayB...I feel your pain. However, you can always put a twist on it. So
much of today's writing is just a creative re-telling of stories from long ago.

I've never read anything like I'm writing, but at the same time, a close examination will find nothing I haven't read before. I'll never encounter the book I've always wanted to write myself until I write a novel myself. No matter how great somebody else's novel is, it's not the story I'm telling the way I'm telling it. It's not mine.

Ugh that would be a bit disappointing...
...but there's always a new idea or a new perspective on a similar idea, right?

similar is not always the same and sometimes from a very different perspective. You never know, they may both be best sellers.

Would U mind reading my peice. I hope no one already written something like it. That would be pretty unnerving. If not, it's okay.
