I was just with a client last week whose wife (isn't it funny how much you can learn about a person when speaking to his wife) told me that he worked for YEARS and never got anywhere. They struggled to make it. Well, when he retired (early) from his factory job, he decided to go work for a friend in "real estate". He had no experience at all, but his friend had been hounding him to "get into the business" for years.

Just as you have said here. . , within a few years, the man became wealthy.

JohnMcNab, yes I have been exhausted and I have resolved to simplify things and go for what it is that I really want

You must be exhausted, MayB!   It all sounds frightening to me.  Your comment about learning struck a chord.  That is what Ell has done with her online jewellery store.  Over a year she has researched and now is accepted locally as an expert.

Great!

I like the idea of taking different approaches to see what works and what doesn't.  You have talked about making those connections and it does work.  I pitched an idea to the writing ezine that has published several of my articles. Just sent an email to the editor asking what they thought of it. They like the idea, but want me to focus it a little bit more.  Keep the good advice coming.

BlancheDubois, I cut back on the teaching - it takes too much time and the writing is picking up with some good outlets however I anticipate getting rich in about 2040

Mayb,
Corrrect me if I'm wrong, but  it sounds like you're doing more freelancing than last June or so, when you were swamped with teaching.  It sounds like you're doing well.

Word.smith, I often feel like that
At the moment I am on a steep learning curve. I've freelanced on and off for years but until about 18 months ago I'd never strayed from the security of a job fulltime or half-time, and a good job at that, writing and editing. It's fair to say that I make it harder for myself by aiming high. HOWEVER, I think some of the same principles apply across the board and building a rapport with commissioning editors and identififying a couple of specialisms and yet still being versatile is the trick. When I decided to go it alone I decided to try a wide range of outlets and approaches and see which ones worked for me. I am still in that phase and I believe it will settle down.

....And then get started.

By the sound of it, you are swamped.  When you write, it puts things in perspective for me. Here I am with one article that apparently won't write itself and there you are with perhaps 10 times more than what I am doing right now.  Thanks for always being the voice of reason.   Way past time to screw my head back on....
