I did get the letters in the newspaper....as did a couple of neighbors; hopefully, that woman will be outtta there....it's nice to see how many people still think about Mama Dawg....she made a real impression on several animal lovers around there.....a genuine "underdog".

I hope you follow through on writing the newspaper. If they won't accept your writing, maybe they would send a reporter out to your neighborhood to do a report about the dog being shot. I don't know if you are as passionate as I am, but my duty for the next year or so would be to get that woman knocked out of office. I would not rest until her smug ass was "out of there".

I had to share this story with my 9 year old sister.

We were giving my dog a bath...and as I was giving my doggie kisses (she's scared of water) I thought about that little dog, and how I would probably have jumped in front of the gun to save it (had I been there...haha) I'm crazy like that...but I've always felt more strongly for those who can't protect themselves.

Even my lil sister had tears in her eyes. Sad when children know right from wrong better than most adults, huh?....

What a tragic story.  And I think you handled it very well.  I hope your story gets into the paper, and that your mayor hasn't barred it from being published with a warning to the editor.

So glad to see you.....sorry I haven't been over in awhile.  And thanks for sharing that story with me; I'm so glad you were able to save your dog.

On the other hand...
she had many friends.  She was the neighborhood's dog.  Lots of people looking after her and, considering her circumstances, she had a good life.  She had you, after all.

stupidity is not limited to
arrogant educators in not-reallyTexas. Years ago I had a dog whose ears were supersensitive to sirens and motorcycles, after-effects of an infection. She would run in circles and howl when a fire truck or a Harley came within a block of our yard. One afternoon I came back from the store to find a cop with a gun at my back door, pointing it down the steps at my dog. Using my scariest mother voice I stopped him. Turned out some new kid had come over to play ball with mine, got scared when Tuffy tried to run away from the pain, and his mama dialed 911. I'm so sorry about your four-legged's hard life. There's got to be a special spot for her with the angels to make up for all the hell she went through.

They had tried several times to catch her when she had her puppies and she had eluded them each time.  I think that was the problem.  Both of the assholes were college professors and the mayor had failed; they had probably had some choice words in their discussions with her the second time they called to complain, causing her to choose to just decide to take the drastic measure.  Had she called, however, I would have had the woman who was feeding the dog try to trap her inside my fence or hire someone to use a tranquilizer shot or see if we could get some knockout drops for her food....anything!

It was so heartbreaking....the little thing was such a little scrapper....survived in spite of it all, made friends up and down the streets here, even though she could only let herself get so close...but she couldn't run from the clumsy shooting of the mayor's stupid decision.

I can imagine how they get to you, from having read about your feelings for your dog, and how you are right now writing about Vic.  I have had fantasies of revenge that involved violence....my creativity can get fairly nasty as an outlet for my grief and outrage. There was something especially sad about this little dog because of her fear of humans...it was so obvious she had been mistreated at some point....and yet, she so craved our society...she would walk right beside me, tail wagging, but no closer than about a foot.  I could tell she wanted so badly to come closer...but just couldn't quite bring herself to trust.  It broke my heart that ....well, it broke my heart.

Under any circumstances that was extreme!
this is why they have dog catchers and not dog marksman.  Just bizarre.  Honest to God people can be such scumbags!  That Mayor needs to be euthanized; the evil bitch.  Unbelievable

What a heartbreaking story...there is little justice in life...especially for those who have been hurt or abused.

You can't imagine how stories like this get to me.  Causing gratuitous injury or death to children or animals is one of the few acts that will make me willingly hurt another human being.  It's paradoxical, but that's how it is.  I could write post-sized comment about this topic, but that quote by Alphonse de Lamartine is more succinct:  "The more I see of certain people, the more I admire my dogs."

I loved that quote you had from Eddie...I'm going to have to remembere that for my mom...she is the biggest animal over I personally know....and she still grieves so for Mama Dawg.  I do believe you about a special corner of hell.....

That dog was so ugly she was cute...she did have the brightest little button eyes!    She had such an impact on so many people.

There's an unused corner of hell a-waitin' for folks like that.
Don't believe me? Ask Eddie Kirkland. You read his comment: "The secret to life is be kind to animals, because they're God's eyes."

Amen to that....I don't think I've ever wanted to slap someone as much as I did that mayor...I forgot to mention that she isn't from around here, either.  I couldn't believe it when her smartass response was to offer to write me a ticket!  I put all that in my letter to the paper....there was quite a response to it.  The poor woman who was feeding the dog couldn't stand it any longer and quit...she was in tears everyday.

All that keeps running though my mind is WHAT A BITCH!  For both the mayor and the neighbor.
