I was pondering this the other day. If he pitied us, would that not strengthen the illusion of dependency? Does not every parent want his children to be independent and self-sufficient?

It's not surprising at all. Insight comes at the most unexpected times. When the mind is relaxed, as in doing physical labor, the door becomes open. Learning to receive is part of understanding. I think it's most accurate to say that I 'receive' what I put down in words. It is passive but very effective.
