I have not lost heart. I very much am going to keep pushing for the best for my family. Right now I am working on opening my own gaming store. I'm not letting this pull me down at all.
And do you really think in a time like this any company is going to raise anyone's wages? Most companies I know are going to go just the opposite. They will get rid of the higher paid people, no matter how good of employees they are and no matter how valuable they are, and replace them with whoever they can find who will work for a whole lot less. That is how most companies work and one of the reason we are in such bad shape.

You're right about the potential for hurricane-induced economic problems
But the way I see it, a huge part of the responsibility for personal economic hardship is due to either the s--t that happens regardless of desire to blame somebody, and/or shortsighted and just plain stupid financial decisions on the personal level. I will certainly step up and take my lumps for the latter, as I am one of way too many Americans who have bought into the easy-crediit scam and am now paying out the nose, ears and ass for it.
You wrote, "People will be having to quit jobs because they can not afford to travel to work." Yes, but then they won't be able to afford anything. Answer? Find work closer to home, or make themselves so valuable to their employers that they will be paid more.
As for how we deal with economic hardship - we can either lose heart, as it sounds like you have done, or apply ourselves to making the best of it. One way that comes to mind is to get involved somehow, by employment, investment or however, in anything having to do with disaster preparedness and with rebuilding from the storms.
