calebs_blogger -- of course they have
I've come to learn from observation that mean spiritedness is not your nature.

I hope my comments
have been taken as good-natured fun mixed with some food for thought.

blair_grattan -- you've gone off on a tangent
Etiquette is all fine and good when it is a two way street. When all considerations are expected to flow in one direction, a feeling derived from an ingrained sense of entitlement among the "faithful", the rules of etiquette become skewed.

Gomedome, my response would be a simple form of etiquette...I will speak only about my faith when invited to...then I know that whatever I say will be recieved however conflicting to my hosts' ideas even if only out of politeness. I would like my audience to be predisposed to my discourse by exposing them to the practical applications of my faith. Ghandi showed first how it was to mount passive resistance before he started talking about it...what we resent as humans, which is natural, is for people to pontificate when they literally have no legs to stand on..As the saying goes, 'I will not even listen to you until I know you cared'...

blair_grattan -- I must agree that tolerance is an important element
in our social interactions. As is using the right to free speech with a degree of responsibility. I wonder however where you would consider the self defined barrier to exist in speaking of how the beliefs of others affect you? As a believer you are in the majority (currently), it is not likely that you will have the experiences that someone in the minority will have, such as a non believer. The problem becomes now, not just using the right to free speech responsibly but balancing this with the need to speak up or be continuously berated by the believing majority. It is not in this sense derision for the sake of conflict but a controlled reciprocation (of the same negative subtleties that I am continuously subjected to) .. with a purpose.

Ariala -- that's right...once any action evolves from harmless fun into
something more serious where people are clearly not having fun, we must step back and realize that this is just a small blogging site. There are no justifyable reasons to warrant continuing an action that harms someone needlessly.

In a word, my polcy is one of tolerance. Freedom of speech is a guaranteed human basic right, but put in its proper context. The right is not a licence to malign or ridicule the faiths of others. My own religious policy is quite simple: I follow God and if others so desire, they can follow after me...as I am simply a follower myself..

ariel70 -- For the most part - these policies have served me well
..occassionally we run into the unreasonable amongst us and may even adopt an unreasonable position ourselves without realizing it but with a clear understanding of the site user agreemant, most trouble can be avoided.

gomedome, it's entertainment until you are slandered and libeled. Then it's
not so fun...I speak from experience.

gomedome

I couldn't agree more!

And, incidentally, I don't think I thanked you for your comment the other day, so I do so now.

Ariala -- my problem is that I've always viewed it as entertainment
It must be a testosterone thing.

Gome, same here...I have had one too many granades thrown my way and
sometimes I can't help but pick them up before they blow and throw them right back and watch them explode. LOL

Ariala -- I'm working on that, call it an effort at self improvement
The being careful part of lobbing grenades back is what I'm speaking of. A huge adjustment to be sure, after a lifetime of a practice that has served me well but can no longer be justified as a means of survival.  There is a point that one must recognize when the perpetrator becomes the victim via reprisal, no matter how much they deserved it.

gomedome, oh yes, "you" was meant generically. Grenades cause
damage, gomey.  Be careful.

Ariala - no one could disagree with that
I assume that you meant "you" as a general term, as I never start the name calling. Mind you, I do get a kick out of the reactions from some people when you toss the grenade that they have just thrown at you back at them.

sannhet -- yep -- you said it - the impossible dream
It need not be this way, nor do people's perspectives concerning respect and tolerance have to remain at the sometimes insufferable that they are now. Every small increment of change in the right direction makes things better for everyone.

I think tolerance and respect are needed...if you start name-calling and
attacking someone's faith or lack of faith, you will offend and bring trouble to yourself.

Gome -
Wouldn't it be great if everyone just behaved in general? A little respect for each other, a little tolerance for others opinions . . . ahhh to dream the impossible dream. . .

Hi Gomedome, I agree with you here. Great post.
