EXACTLY! I have a professor right now who has us make timelines for the class. Its not so that we know exactly when something happened, but that we know in what order things happened.

that's very true...
I do think many history teachers get caught up on dates... timelines are important, but exact dates? In high school, it would be better to learn the general idea than to focus so much on the details.
