I agree on splitting up the rankings
but I must admit that I haven't a clue as to how they arrive at the rankings in the first place. Is 134 better than 250 or vice versa?

Popularity within categories
Please note that you can view the blog rankings within each category by simply clicking on the any of the categories on the left side of home page and sorting the category by popularity (which is the default).
The list in that category shows you only the blogs that belong in that particular category and how popular each one of them is within that category.
There are currently tens of thousands of blogs on Blogit. The rankings that you can see next to the name of a blog on your profile page are the overall rankings amongst those tens of thousands of blogs.
Thank you.

Now that's funny majroj... very true... but funny. In watching my page views and charting the up and down movement of a particular blog, I begin to form ideas.
Addressing the question asked as to a childrens section, I think it might be helpful for some but a quick glance at most writers mags will show you that the childrens market is flooded right now and has been for some time. Unless you just want to bring your material out for a general consensus trial run, hopes of getting that kind of material to market are slim. I guess you can mark that up as a 'guarded yes' vote.
