well . . .
it was church in name only -- christina in name only
kids act the same inside and outside of church.
most anybody who has experienced knows that.
maybe that's why I say the "true Christians" don't have to believe in god necessarily. they just have to believe in themselves and the dignity of those around them.

One thing I did not talk about here was a Church related Youth Group (I think it was called Stockade) that I was involved with and the kids there really were about the worst group when it came to picking on me and no one stopped them, even though Adults seemed to always be around. I had not really though about them for some time now. I was never really that into the group and I don't think I spent more than a year with them. But this was a case where the Christians youth group helped to tear down my self esteem and made me feel more worthless. So my basic experiences differed from yours. I really can honestly say Church and most things related to church did nothing at all to help me and mostly caused me grief.
It really seems that everywhere I look in my youth, religion basically tore me done and the absence of it helped to build me back up. I do not see it so much as courage, although part of it has to deal with being brave enough to face reality, but more along the lines of no longer worrying. To me it was just growing up and seeing things for what they are.

Good post. For me church experience were a little different. I was able to find a support group during my childhood and early teens. Doing various church related activities also helped me develop musical talent. However, since leaving the church I've become less inhibited. I now dress the way I want to. Say what I want to. In short, I've become more outgoing. It takes courage to face a world without God. Unfortunately, there are many christians that are too "soft" and lack any backbone whatsoever.

Good post--
I once asked a person "when is light darkness?" At the time I was a Christian. After spending some time with this person discussing God, humanity, sin, and the teachings of Christianity I realized the answer to my own question--that is when the light of sanity shines in the darkness of insanity.
peace,
