Masky,
I've found that giving and getting critiques has been a good experience for me too. I have learnt so much in a short time just by being shown the mistakes I've made and how I can improve.
Stepping away is good. I've rested my story for a few days and am about to do the final edit. A fresh perspective is very helpful in writing that final draft.
Thanks for sharing.

Word.smith...I had the opportunity to review/critique someone's work
yesterday. Based on the comments we bounced amongst ourselves, it was a positive experience and let to the potential for added details. It is so important for a writer to detach from his/ work. Writing is alot like looking in the mirror: we get so used to looking at the same face everyday that we neglect to see changes. However, when we step away from the mirror for a days, come back and look again, changes and details are more detectable. Good advise, word! Important advise that all writers should take!

Great tip! I have been noticing that cutting out unecessary words can distill a piece of writing into a purer form.
