Hi Again, Alf!

Here's a link to a recent article written in National Geographic magazine about the connection between hurricanes and global warming.  The magazine devoted a whole issue to the topic, which you could find by navigating their site if you're interested.  There is a lot of scientific, nonpartisan information about the topic - if you don't care for National Geographic's coverage, you can look at the end of their articles for the sources they used and continue researching from there.

I know you want a healthy planet, and so do I!  The bottom line is, yes - there is a natural cycle of warmning and cooling of ou earth.  The question as I see it is, whether or not we are accelerating the process by putting an unnatural amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and, in turn, speeding it up beyond what nature can handle.

Thanks for the provocative topic!  Nice to see you posting again, Alf!

Exactly.. it is nature! It happens and has happened and will continue to happen! You are not alone!!

Georgia...

I am not an advocate of air pollution, but I believe it is a only a theory that the use of fossil fuels is doing something to cool down or heat up the earth.  For all the science that backs up global warming there are just as many papers to the contrary.  The other side believes that global warming is a natural and necesary cycle of our planet just like the defrost mechanism on a refrigorator.  If there is definitive proof as to the cause of global warming I would like to see it, by proof I mean meeting the scientific criteria of proof, rather than opinion.

Like the ozone hole...they say we are making it bigger.  Science says that it fuctuates in size naturally.  The fact is that it would be impossible to detroy the ozone unless we first destroyed th sun...because the sun is what creates ozone and keeps it replentished.

I really don't disagree with you, although it may sound like I do...I am for a healthy planet.  I just think we humans have to go through certain stages in order to get there.  Our air quality is betyter today than it was 50 years ago.  50 years from now it will be better than it is today.  Eventually fossil fuels will be a thing of the past but we have to arrive there naturally.

Whew!  I'm done now.

Oops!
Alf .. that first sentence should read "One way we are speeding up nature's natural warming and cooling cycles is with unmitigated use of fossil fuels."  Makes more sense that way!

Alf ...

One way we are speeding up nature's natural warming and cooling cycles with unmitigated use of fossil fuels.  For example, we shop at WalMart in order to purchase cheap products, which are primarily produced in foreign factories, creating an increase in their demand for oil, which drives up our price at the pump.  So, we spend the money we save at WalMart at the gas station every time we fill up.

The counter-argument is that if the mass-producers of frivious products made for the Western consumer market are no longer needed, the centrally controlled governments of those nations will turn those factories into weapon manufacturers, because they "have to make money somehow".  Not true.  Those governement economies will make whatever the market demands.  Let's stop demanding electric potpourri burners, tanzanite rings, and all that other crap they sell on late-night home shopping networks. Instead, let's take the lead and create inventions that in turn create a market for environmentally friendly products.  We can either get with the program and use our ingenuity to create environmentally sound products and lead the market, or we can let the world create those products, leaving us to service them.  I prefer the first scenario!

Good post, Alf.   Blame is always the quickest and easiest way to keep from taking personal responsibility.

Passionflower...
Forgive me, but I would have to say your experience is not indicative of the majority.  The men I know and associate with are far less shallow and much more practical than to choose a young woman over a 45 year old woman based solely on appearances as in the example you gave.  Especially, if the mans intent is to begin a relationship.  It sounds like you are painting the entire male gender with the same brush here...and I  object.

Norseman...all men SAY they wouldn't, but they do.
That's what experience has taught me anyway!

That is a prime example of what I am talking about.

Hemlocker...
I agree, "plan" is a better word than "react", that's really what I meant.  I also suppose we could treat our planet better and I think we have made great strides in the past 50 years, we are a young species and are still adjusting to our technology.  As far as wiping out species goes...Species come and go, it is the way of things since long before we were here.  For every species that becomes extinct others take their place.  Most species that are around today were not here in this form 10,000 years ago.  There are still many species yet to be discovered.  We may one day be extinct, replaced by some more worthy version of ourselves...who knows.  As a human, I just want to take responsibility for what is ours though...not for everything.  Thanks for the comment.

I don't know why you think that...I for one would never choose the 25 year old.

Alf--
I appreciate your point of view, but I believe what we must do is not react, but plan, and change our behaviour in the way we treat our planet.  Maybe the planet will re-generate after we are gone, maybe not--but why do we need to wipe out our own and thousands of other species to get to that point?  Hemlocker

As I've said before, I'm not commenting on whether or not

God was judging New Orleans...some of the religious folks can beat it out of one another and I'm sure they will. All I'm saying is we had a perfectly beautiful planet that worked amazingly well and we were careless with it.

We haven't been diligent in preserving our planetary systems or its resources. We're a superficial species that largely judges ALL by appearances. Here's a good example:

Though most of the dating profiles say that the person (more men than women) is looking for someone who is deep, mature and well-rounded, if given a choice bet a hot looking 25 yr old and an intelligent, well read 45 yr old, the guy always WITHOUT FAIL chooses the 25 yr old.

"Nature Happens" sounds like a good bumper sticker slogan. You're not alone. The worst for me was the people who said Hurrican Katrina was the fault of gays, because God didn't like that they were going to hold a festival in New Orleans last weekend.
