Everyone in New Orleans had the opportunity to evacuate. As a matter of fact, according to the news reports just prior to Katrina coming ashore, the highways were clear, the evacuation complete. There were buses available for evacuaees who didn't have transportation and some eighty percent of the citizens of New Orleans did evacuate. The folks that stayed behind, stayed behind.
New Orleans is not the only desaster area. The Mississippi Gulf Coast is, for all purpposes, gone, the rest of the state is is in ruins or suffered major damage. The Gulf Coast of Alabama, still recovering from the hurricane last year, was hammered again. North Alabama also suffered damage, trees down, many houses damaged or destroyed, power outages.
Air drop food and water? Can you imagine the riot if relief was delivered in such a manner? Most of the airlift capability is still being used in rescue efforts and transporting critically ill patients out of the area. And, being shot at for their effort. Rescue boats, privately owned, ready to aid in the rescue attempt have come under fire and the effort halted.
New Orleans police have been overwhelmed, and in some cases, are no longer trying to keep order. Thugs are raping and killing folks, and, in control of the situation because law enforcement, the National Guard, at this point, is restrained from shooting back.
So, what would you do??
