Quirky,
I understand that some need friendly competition, but I feel that the ranking system here just causes people to write anything they can in order to be number one. I think it takes away from what the main idea of Blogit should be...to write meaningful, interesting, thought provoking content. Good post.

The ranking system...
Is bothersome in a lot of readers just read the top few and very seldom venture further.  On the other hand, if you get up there it is handy since it isn't as hard to get read.  Of course you have to claw your way up.  I don't have time for all that, too much other stuff happening in real life right now.

If there is a choice
of what you see, then there could be a ranked list and an 'activity' list where the top post is the most recent in that catagory. Most forums have that option on searches, it wouldnt be too difficult to put in place here.

Quirky,
has to be a balance between the two! I should be writing good content, but also content that people want to read!...But yes, it can be very tricky!

I really wouldn't care one way or the other, to be honest...

I agree
It seems some of the real gems get lost because of the way the ratings work.

good idea Quirky

I love the comments only because I like seeing what people think of my blogs not because it means clicks and honestly I have no idea how to even check the ranks. doesn't matter to me anyway. How much money does anyone honestly expect to make here anyway?/

quirky--
Good ideas.  I've tried to find a balance between "the game" and content.  I'm writing about sort of universal subjects a larger number of people might want to read, but I have not compromised the quality of what I write.  At least I hope I haven't.  I guess the system is that the more hits (clicks) you get, the better opportunity to earn a little money.  Hell, I'm already up to nearly $10 a month.  Maybe I'll be able to break even fairly soon.  Hemlocker

Why get rid of a system that replicates life? Everyone who truly enjoys reading the thoughts and experiences of others will surf and find many treasures. The New Writers listing often displayed on the right hand of the Home page helps with this. Sure, there are so-called manipulators; but many of them are schooled and experienced in marketing. That is not to be begrudged. Others can even learn from them if their interest goes beyond a love of writing. It's all part of the varied experience here.

I don't think it should go but maybe if the scoreboard was not recording minute by minute stats, the focus would be less on numbers and more on words

I agree with Alexa that no one minds healthy competition ... sometimes here it is unhealthy.

I'm against on this one, Quirks. I think the competitive element is why we're here and not elsewhere in the first place. I'm a member at Writing.Com for instance and every now and then, they send me an email to say: we are going to terminate you.

It's because I choose Blogit over them. I like the pitting of wit against wit, word against word, tactic against anti-tactic. I like to read what others have read to the top. I also like to read what lies beneath. The submarine world is often of extraordinary interest.

Many of us do have feet in other camps - I have a free-to-read blog on AOL - but we come here for something different. When the game goes rotten, I agree, it can be horrific, but when the game is flowing with sublime passing of the ball, it is an unmatchable beauty.

I know I'm mixing my metaphors, but that's because I've been mixing my drinks tonight.

However...

If there was no ranking, I might not have read your post, we might not be having this discussion.

Nevertheless, I do salute you for raising the banner of the People's Republic of Blogit. Like you, I do want some modicum of harmony.

i think the ranking system is in place to keep people motivated. There are some who don't mind a little healthy competition. However, I don't think that it diminishes the importance of anyone else's blog. I like to read everybody, regardless of their popularity rank...Alexa

i hate what the ranking makes of some bloggers...
i mean some click manipulative whores who would sell their souls for some $$$...and a good ranking...

Quirky,
I'm not sure...I kind-a like the ranking system...but then again you are totally right with all you say in this post...I vote undecided...

Quirky, it would be very interesting to experience Blogit without a ranking system.
