Similarity, yes; Same, no...
I have often been told I look like someone else.  On rare occasion, I have seen a photo or know of whom they speak.  Many times I do not resemble the person at all, but maybe the hair or some feature brought them to this conclusion.  Same dark hair and shape of nose does not make a look-alike.  Anyway, no 2 pictures of me are quite the same, so you can see how a person could have a near likeness to any one of them but still not look like me exactly).  But even if there were someone to look like me out there, they could not be "of the same mold" when it comes to personality.  This would be true even if someone made a clone.  Personality is the true essence of who we are.  I know I'm unique, as I'm sure you are too.

No, that's not unrelated at all! ...and all interesting things to think about; I ponder these things too!

string theory, parallel universes
I know it sounds unrelated to the topic, one of the newest scientific theories is that the universe is made up of harmonic strings that unite space and time. Also that there are not 3 or 4 dimensions, but 11, and at least one parallel universe. I've often wondered if dreams are actually visits to another dimension or parallel plane.  And if people are seeing your double, possibly the other you has somehow slipped into this dimension.

Ya think?
Once a friend brought me a photo of a gal that was in an advertisement, clothing-flyer, because they said it looked like me.  If I didn't know it wasn't me, I would have to admit, it's me!  Ha-ha

wouldn't it be freaky to "accidentally" come face to face with someone who looks like we do? I think it's very likely we have many "near twins" running around in the world--we just never usually meet them!!

I believe your theory
I have lived in many states, and I am always told that I remind them of someone or that I have a twin running around. I have never met this twin, but if I do I am running like hell.

I don't believe in using science to try to explain human existence--anyway, as I said, it is a farfetched theory...but I don't think it can be PROVEN to be incorrect. Thanks for reading!

Quirky, I don't know much about these websites, but they do talk

about the twelve tribes and give symbols, characteristics of the tribes:

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know about the Twelve Tribes. It would be very interesting to know a lot of things "for sure" but alas, we can't.

I beleive it. There are definitely a certain number of "types"..Everyone
supposedly has a doppelganger. I've met people who looked and then
turned out to be very much like friends elsewhere who I considered
very unique.

hypothesis on similarity

your blog makes interesting reading. but unfortunately it is not even remotely true. sure, every human being is set on a mold - that is two legs, two hands, ability to walk and work, head, brain, and so on on. and there the similarity seems to be over. no two human beings are similar, not even father to son or mother to daughter. the reason is our genes. latest human genetic mapping indicates over three billion genes in human body, and that means incalculable permutation and combination of genetic diversity. bank pins are based on 4 digits and their variations ensures the specific accounting. with 3 billion? no possibility of a repetation. there can be no molds -so that the production process of human beings could choose selectively. there could be no socialism in human reproduction, as the joke had it, since the means of production were privately owned. but jokes apart, the unfathomable possibilities of gene placements in DNA rules out any such conjecture.

quirky
I've had a similar theory. What's to explain why unrelated people sometimes look so alike? Hemlocker

Now I know why Homer Simpson looks like me. Hmmm.

posted by dog1net on August 20, 2005 at 6:55 PM | link to this | reply

Hmmm, definitely something to think about although I don't necessarily like that theory! But I've been told on several occasions that I look like someone else.

Quirky...

I think it is safe to say that mathmatically...there is a finite number of "types"  among the human poplulation.  It only stands to reason I think.  There is after all a finite number of "types" of noses, of eyes, of mouths, etc., throughout the billions of us that there are it is only reasonable that these features would come together statistically with some regularity to form recognizable types.  Science has broken people down into ectomorph, mesomorphs, and endomorphs, referring to the dimensions of ones body.  Everybody falls into one of these three types, or a combination of these types.

The part of us that is not finite is our personality...I believe that there is an infinite number of trait combinations that people can posess, I believe that environment, nurture, and genetics all play critical roles.  Take environment alone, how many lives have there been on the planet?  That is how many variables can be added to the equation.  Everytime a new life comes along a unique set of experiences comes with it.

My parents always said they broke the mold...and then they made me.  I'm not sure what they are trying to say there??
