Self confidence is based on illusion -
just ask any athlete - baseball players are the worst. Get on a lucky streak and the player does nothing to change his routine, from wearing the same stinky jock to never washing his socks. Get on a losing streak, and the player will do anything to change his luck and get his confidence back.

bettyboop, It's the same
with me. It's great when you live with someone who knows you, and sees you, and loves you, no matter what.

factorfiction, I'm just begining
to get used to seeing myself in photos without make-up. Sounds like you've got your priorities in good order now, enjoying your family!

Ca88, I wash my face now too
before bed. It's amazing that I didn't have pimples given how I treated my skin.

Funny how...
when we are young we need the makeup less but want it more. At age 37, I love the fact now that I have a man who adores me without makeup. I may feel self-conscious going out in public without it sometimes, but I know I don't need it to impress him. And that feels wonderful.

I can relate.. as a teen I would put on makeup for those Christmas morning pictures! (We always had to wiat to morning, no matter how old we got.) No more...my kids will have pictures where I look like I have been awakened way too early after too little sleep...because I have! It's amazing to me that the older I get the less often I bother with it.

I can so relate to this post! I too discovered makeup at an early age, but had to hide it from my parents as they tried very hard to discourage me from wearing any. I've never got up in the middle of the night to reapply, although as a teenager I often forgot to remove it before bed. Now I'm dedicated to washing my face at night and sometimes, if I'm staying home all day, will even go without it.

I took a stage makeup course, and "directed" makeup for a college play.
("Shakuntala and the Magic Ring", with Dr. Cheryl Downey-Wilber directing).
Every time I saw a pretty girl, I saw her as she would be at seventy. (eeek!).Tough when you are nineteen.
But I also learned to appreciate nuances of the face unadorned. Works both ways.
The male lead refused to allow anyone to help him with his East Indian makeup, but others needed help and accepted it professionally, sometimes gratefully, and rarely needily. As half the job was slathering Max Factor pancake #7 (which I went to buy at Factor's old store in Hollywood where I was almost caught in a bank robbery...another time, readers) onto torsos with a big sponge, a lot of this help was actually just scut work...luckily for them!
And, no, I don't wear makeup!

What no one in high school ever seems to grasp or be told
is that makeup that looks terrific on screen and magazine looks anywhere from too much to way, way too much on a real live face. That the target audience should be in awe of the eyes, not the eye-shadow.
I saw a girl recently who had so much pastel color on her lids when she blinked she looked like a freakin' alien!
