Two different commandments

If I may throw in my two cents worth, I think  your were right the first time about the first commandment.  God really does want to be the one and only and has zero tolerance for anything which falls short.

"You shall have no other gods before [a] me."

The other things you mention about things we might put before God like friends, family, career, money, nice house, etc. are really idol worship and the subject of the second commandment.

"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.

But.. I admit the two are intertwined and inseparable.

and today I meet Him with each step...

(I can't remember who wrote that)...  There is no God but God - There is nothing but God - no face looking back  at you that does not hold Him, no situation that is not His - there is nothing but God... as Brother Lawrence lived - as if only God and he were in the world... "and today I meet Him with each step..."

oh, life is so sweet when lived like this...

Xeno -
I remember reading these a while back. I like the basic premise, though still a little to "human" for me.

you will notice that it does recognize other gods

but -- this is the supreme god -- the one we recognize as supreme
now we have to figure out how to worship this god now don't we?
