In North America, the mention of slavery immediately conjures up thoughts of Africans brought here against their will to work the southern plantations. This is only the tail end of the history of slavery, servitude and indentured service world wide.

It is worth considering that Africans were not the only people subjected to slavery.  Hundreds of poor white people in England were forced into servitude through indenturement.  If the wanted to go to the new world they had to work for a master without any pay.  Slavery is not unique to black people.  The Romans, Aztecs and Greeks practiced it too.  What do you think happened in ancient wars?  As for the gay marriage issue I don't think the government should have any say whatsoever in marriage.  Straight and gay.
