(Tom Petty definitely would have never had a hit if he had come along post-music video!)  I too get depressed when I realize that U2 are considered "classic rock." How am I that old?  Bono will be a grandpa before I know it. I hate to say it since I don't do drugs, but Aerosmith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers began to suck when they quit doing drugs. Most music today really blows. Or at least music that gets noticed.  There is still good stuff out there, but it's too much trouble in my old age to seek it out.  I like my next door neighbor's band.  The former lead singer of the Toadies is their vocalist and the former drummer for Reverend Horton Heat is in the band as well.  They are kind of like The Toadies deciding to put on eyeliner, play arenas and have some fun.  Check 'em out: www.burdenbrothers.us

It is a sad world, indeed.

Funny.  I was thinking precisely of the Stones, too.  Had they not already been popular they would have never made it in to the music scene.  There are a lot of musicians, though, that were popular enough in the late 70's that simply disappeared after the 80's introduction to you-must-be-sexy-or-you-can't-possibly-sing.

PS
That's absolutely it, it's style over substance -- substance abuse.   If there were rock videos back in the '60s and appearance was top priority, Mick Jagger would be an accountant right now.  Bob Dylan would be collecting cans and bottles in his grocery cart.  Janis Joplin would be... well, Janis might be better off.

Someone needs to stroke that c*ck!

I have something that I wrote about this, also...  About the lack of hard-core music or anything really that isn't completely  flaccid and vapid.  A pity, really.

You're old now, at least in spirit.  It just happens.  If you have standards you can't help but be disappointed by the anti-direction music has spiralled into.

But what were the definitive moments of music turning soft?  We were all right in the middle of a fantastic, melodic orgy with stiff, stiff drums when suddenly it just went soft...

Ahhh... yes.
I remember.

Definitive moment:  1980 - the introduction of the music video.

Remember the song Video Killed the Radio Star?

Well, now musicians have to be attractive and musically talented.  You can't really hit the jackpot everytime so you just end up with cute people that can blow a kazoo.

Wretched!

And by the way, that is a tumor.
