LOL- that was funny!!
I don't like fishing either. Honestly, I don't like having junk in my yard or being broke, but I'm working on improvements one weedwacker at a time.

How did YOU get persuaded into moving to the country? I love these blogs you have because people don't realize how different it is unless they see it for themselves. I moved to SC from outside of Chicago, so I sort of got suckered into this whole backwoods thing myself. Take care, Angie

Shades of Phyllis Diller
Phyllis Diller used to say her husband "Fang" wouldn't come in her kitchen because he was afraid of rats, and then there'd be that big, bellowing laugh. Whenever you write about your "monster" I hear Phyllis's great laugh in the background. I love the way he introduced you to Martha 1 and the science of fishing, sounds like something I would do. :)

Good point! When I saw it I went crazy until I could get the waitress over to ask her why in the hell they had little plastic bags full of water hangin' around over the doors and windows!! It was a BBQ place with the pits outside that cooks came in and out a lot so flies would normally have been a big problem but there wasn't a damn one anywhere. Come on....give 'em somethin' to talk about...it's fun to mess with those people!!! Tell them The Monster has a rare disease that he has to have Royal Jelly from killer bees in an exact proportion to salt water in an IV every night but that he doesn't think anyone knows so you tell him everyone thinks it's to kill flies....see how they start treating him, how nice they are to him and what they start bringing him..

You know, it's funny, but I can thread a whole worm on a fishing hook with no problem...I mean the whole thing with just a little bit off the end to wiggle and attract the fish!!....and I'm really a very sweet thing...my grandfather taught me how to do that when I was a little girl and it was just something I've always been able to do...that and dig 'em up!!...BTW...I recently learned that if you hang a platic bag filled with water up over a window or door it keeps flies away..they see their reflection in it or something...learned that in a restaurant where they did that...really, it works.

Earthworms? Whatever!
Joe- I once did some salt-water fishing up here, using these NASTY seaworms as bait. Man these things were ugh.... Take your average night-crawler, make it thrice the thickness, give it a mouth that bites (no joke) and color it forest green with a whole bunch of soft spines that look like legs. Yikes!
BTW, love your posts!

Oh you city boys!
I grew up with a dam in my backyard, so I've become an expert at the whole fishing thing. Sometimes catching the worm is the worst part tho, I guess.
P.S. on your last post: I don't know if it works for all bugs, but my house gets really bad ladybugs...if you put a line of pepper across the windowsills in your problem rooms, it works just as well as spraying and you don't have to worry about something that will hurt your dogs.

Hi Joe_Love....Is the pond name after Rick Pitino? B-ball Coach?
Pitino is handsome. Please clue me in on the why the pond is named as such...LOved this post, too. Great observation and great picture of the Marthas. Nice job, Joe!

Hilarious!
You know, I've been fishing nearly all my life, and I still hate to mess with live bait. The worst are crickets. They just stare you down with beady little accusatory eyes before they make the most disgusting tortured inquisition type movements on the hook. Of course, then a big fat bream eats it, and soon the fresh fish in a pan totally absolves whatever distaste and guilt was there. But it's still kinda nasty.

Just when you think you've cut off their argument, it comes back via a different mouth

Ugh, exactly why I'm not into fishing
that and the fact of what to do if I actually catch something. Clean 'em and cook 'em?? No thanks, God invented Captain D's for a reason. ;)
Enjoyable post JoeLove.

As usual, I was sitting at that
beautiful pond with you (thanks to your imagery) and I what I am wondering, is how you did taking the fish off the hook? I hope it wasn't a catfish (they have spines). Do Sierra and Sinatra swim in the pond, or aren't they swimmers?

as usual, great post.... and frankly i like the generalization of the Monster in your writing.... it makes it easier to think from your perspective..... (just my two cents) its a great column, i love it! i was showing it to a friend of mine last night and she laughed so hard at your blueberry post...... :)
and what a jerk... you sat down so he fled with his little friend to the other side of the pond?
i love the relaxing of the fishing but would rather sit on a bench and read a book.... and i will not touch the worm, kill it, pull the fish off the line (assuming i actually caught one) or clean a fish. EW....

You know I am feeling rather ornery (sp?) tonight so behave yourself. I can write my own freaking porn if I want. WHO is the Monster and what is his (assuming a him) to you. Why do you live with someone you call the Monster? Inquiring minds (Quirky one's too) want to know!
