it's a new generation
diseases, wars, nuclear and biological weaponry (etc.), global warming, many things, including preachers concocting doomsday situations that just aren't there -- all these are part of the mix.
every generation has those who fall into believing all this. Sometimes, many thousands, sometimes, just a few.
The big question is "What makes people believe?". And so much that they follow charismatic leaders to their deaths (or the death of others [Chas. Manson]).
People want to believe that something is true. Everybody still seeks that honest man, and want to believe that the next person they meet is such -- thus they fall for the sales pitch.
It's like buying a new car -- the sales pitch says this will be your salvation.
Yet there are so many of this new generation who have eschewed the faith stories and stand in self assurance and are pretty stable in themselves. They have rejected the old, inaccurate answers, and seek and have discovered answers of their own. These are the ones who have found more salvation than those who "make the altar call".
