If it's not New Orleans, then Memphis. Control Memphis and you control the Mississippi River. This one I didn't look up, especially if it's wrong.

OK, New Hint. New Orleans was the largest city in the South in
February of 1862. Not the second largest.

Whoops! Forgot about the second part...
the capture of New Orleans prevented the South from receiving supplies and stuff via the Mississippi River. Not sure what the significance was to the North, other than, obviously,
