Personally...

I thought the acting in the most recent version of War of the Worlds failed miserably--except for Tom Cruise. I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan as I don't see any of his movies as being all that great, but he was the only shining star in Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Dakota Fanning was just annoying beyond words and hardly believable at all. And the street scene where Cruise's character pauses with his two neighborhood acquaintances to assess the situation after the initial attack...sheesh...the acting was so wooden that I felt embarrassed for Spielberg!

Still, that movie scares the crap out of me...despite Tim Robbins. (Will that guy ever go away?)

Now, when can we expect your review of Crash?

yep, it'd be good to see a movie that breaksaway from the stereotypical bald asexual alien scenario

good question... in this film adaptation of the story the machinery of the tripods lay dormant beneath the ground and are struck by lightening (which channels the actual aliens into the machinery - and the aliens are eventually destroyed by bacteria)... so the lightening strikes replace the idea of incoming spaceships... to me it's a kind of interesting play on danger being right beneath our feet and it accentuates that state of ignornace referred to in those initial words of H.G. Wells at the commencement of the book.

robdon, so how do bacteria defeat them if they've been here a while?

I saw it too and enjoyed it a lot. I agree that seeing the aliens lessened the horror so to speak, but I know that if I never saw them, I would've been pissed. Have you noticed that aliens of the so-called "advanced" type are always wide-eyed, big-headed, hairless, asexual, incredibly thin, and naked?
