Julia
“ You are old, Grandpa Ariel!”
his ( cheeky )young grandson said.
“ Why is there no hair on your head!
“Why does your face look like a prune?
Does it mean that you’ll die real soon?”
( Boys. Got no respect these days. )
Ariel gave an affectionate pat
to the head of that precocious brat.
A pat that was really more of a slap,
‘cos he was a cheeky young chap.
(A firm hand, that’s what kids need. )
And gazing down his knifelike beak
Ariel pinched his plump soft cheek,
in one long and scaly claw,
and said, with a with a loud guffaw,
( he does that now and again, you know)
“ It’s a saying that we should applaud,
that my grandchild is God’s reward
to me, my naughty little lad,
for my not killing your Mum and Dad.”
( How true, Ariel! How very true! )
( Only kidding! I love my four grandchildren. And although I was often tempted, I’m glad I didn’t kill their parents
Sorry about that!!!

oh
I looked up "You are old, Father William" in Yahoo's search feature, and found it is from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Oh. It was, for the record, printed as an independent poem in the children's poetry anthology which I mentioned.

why I veered off into "Father William"
Blanche01's quote, purportedly from Lewis Carroll, actually is from "Father William." I forget the exact wording of the young man's speech which precedes it, but the ending question is, "Do you think, at your age, it is right?"

"Father William" comment
This is a reference to a poem I found in a children's poetry anthology called Time For Poetry. I believe the poem is called "Father William." A young man asks an older fellow a number of questions and receives answers, e.g.:
"You are old, Father William; and your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you managed the goose, with the bones and the beak:
Pray, how did you manage to do it?"
"In my youth," said the old man, "I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife,
And the marvelous strength which it gave to my jaw
Has lasted the rest of my life."
"Be off, or I'll kick you downstairs!" is the last line of this poem.

Dylan,
Yes, exactly...you cannot fail as long as you keep trying! Look how many "failures" it took for the invention of the lightbulb!

Why we should always try even when...
...the odds are stacked against us: If we don't try, there is a zero percent chance of us getting what we want. If we do try, there is at least some chance of us getting what we want. Given the alternative, why not try?

Quirky,
It's true, it's true. That's why I like Lewis Carroll's quote, from Alice, I think: "When I was a young man, I feel to stand on my head for fear it would injure my brain, now that I'm old and know that I have none, I do it again and again."

Cool, thanks Quirky. You made my day. Besides, I hadn't read those other two quotes. I like the quote from JackKeruoac about potential, it feels to me that the error that I've made in relation to that, is to feel that by choosing one path, all paths close, and I have lost my potential in other areas. That's a wrong assumption, I think, because we have certain gifts that we excel at, so that to devote ourselves to bringing out the utmost, is to bring that potential to flower. See, you've gone and made me think, dang, I hate that.
