Uh no...I never agreed to the catwalk OR the can-can...did I??

It's agreed then -- you take the catwalk and do the can-can. I'll look forward to it ;-)

MayB,
don't fall off your chair, but THAT I can agree with you on...

No. I'll leave the catwalk and can-can to you. No, I am saying people want readers but they are not necessarily seeking to entertain. They might be seeking support or reassurance or validation or just to inform

MayB IS a Blogit Showgirl---pass it on!
LOL--sorry...I guess I have to agree again dammit...no wait, I still think most bloggers are writing to entertain, or to at least move someone to think or to have any one of numerous emotions. If they were primarily expressing themselves they could do that in their private journal and save $6.

actually people who are deadly serious make me laugh most. I don't think a blogger has a duty to entertain - they might provide info or news or they might just need to express themselves. Now, I'm not gonna get in one of these discussions again about the roles and obligations of bloggers. We owe it to ourselves to do what we each need and want to do within reason. Look there I go being so damned reasonable yet again.

Well they don't have to. I am not a Blogit showgirl

Oh you got me there.. ca-ching! But they have to at least ENTERTAIN...right??

Bloggers don't have to give good information (that's why I like it so much) and sadly they often live down to that

posted by Azur on August 10, 2005 at 9:34 PM | link to this | reply

MayB--

Of course a columnist must give the reader good and valuable information---but isn't that part of the "job description"...and if they didn't do that, they wouldn't HAVE a job! Bloggers have to do that as well, in addition to everything else!! Who has time to sleep? lol.

posted by Julia. on August 10, 2005 at 9:08 PM | link to this | reply

Hmm. I'm not sure about this. You say "Newspaper columnists have people who read them daily or weekly because they are interested in what the columnist has to say. The columnist's sole responsibility is to write; they're not required to "pay back" the reader in any manner."

The pay back is to give the reader good and reliable information. If the columnist does not do that they should not be in the job. Ok, back to my column....

I try to comment when I read, but I have to admit sometimes I just don't know what to say. And yes, of course sometimes I comment in order to attract others to my blog!

L.E. Gant,
You make a valid point...I do think Blogit serves very different purposes for beginning writers as opposed to those of us who have been in the business a long time.

jingabell,
not quite sure how to take your "just kidding with the thumbs up" comment...but you know, I was not at all complaining here, just stating my opinion and thoughts from the point of view of a grizzled writer who has been writing for a looooooong time ;-)

Just kidding with that thumbs up emoticon
You are definately right about some bloggers just skimming and leaving a quick word or two, but instead of complaining be happy that they do this, it's what racks up the big bucks, haha.  Albeit even if it is usually so you will check out their blog site.  Personally I find myself doing a lot of commenting some nights and a lot of posting on my own blog some nights, either way I give it my best.  I enjoy most of the blogs I read and usually have something constructive to say about them, but I, like you, are first and foremost a writer so I would be here even if no one ever read my posts again. But, you should check my blog out because it's really good and you'll really enjoy it, haha.  Just kidding.

Quirky: I think it was Cent who suggested a read-only subscription a short while back. It's a good idea, whether implemented or not. Basic mechanics sound simple - after all, Blogit does have its gold, silver and basic memberships (as well as the classic), so another member type would not be so hard to implement.

I think, though, that the blogit model is excellent for new writers: it forces them to recognise that they have to constantly drum up business, regardless of how well they write. I think of comments as "advertising" or "query letters" in that regard. The danger is that it's preaching to the choir.

No, I don't comment as often as I should. I loathe putting down a one- or two- word comment. If I can't add to the content, or voice a disagreement, then I think it's pointless to comment. If the people then come to my blog(s), great! If they don't, then they probably would not get anythng out of them, so who cares?

Talion,
Thanks for your comment. I believe you, but I also think there aren't many bloggers who approach it like you do. I could very well be wrong, but that's my opinion.

Factor,
Yes, I think that would be good for all in the long run.

Quirkyalone
I understand that reading and commenting is part of the "game," but my reading and commenting isn't just "playing." I comment because I have something to say, beyond "good post" and such. I hope that a newbie or someone who's never commented on one of my posts will be inspired to check out my work, based on a great comment I left on their's, but I don't expect it. I don't consider it mandatory. I read many people who, as far as I can tell, never click in return. I read plenty of posts and never make an effort to comment. Sure, I play the game from time to time, but for the most part, I seperate Talion the reader from Talion the writer.

Yeah, I think I have heard it suggested

that blogit should advertise for readers as well... I think that is a good idea.

bettyboop,
there may be one or two, but for the most part, people come here to write, and the reading is a part of that.

mmm--
yes of course...and not everyone is going to "fit the mold" because there are a lot of different reasons why people are here.

Good Point
I doubt there are people who join only to read and not write.

Blogging, A Swap Meet,or What?
Whap, right on the nose. Is the Blogit Model a bad deal for writers? I guess it all depends on what the blogger is trying to accomplish. Do I want to increase my readership, you betcha. Am I willing to read and comment on other blogs? I find them interesting and worthy of comment, for the most part. Other ideas, other opinions give me other ideas and opinions and for me, the process is more than worth it. And, a big plus, like athletics, the more you practice, write, the better you get.

hmmmm
very good point, but i also think there is more to it.... it's as you say but not as selfish as it sounds
