- Go to Kingmi Asks How Do We Recruit Through Patriotism?
Both of you are absolutely right, scoop and Tapsel-T.
I read a report the other day that parents have become the highest hurdle the recruiters must surmount to get to the recruits. And rightly so. No parent wants his or her child to die, and they damn sure don't want them to die in a faraway land in a war that shouldn't even have begun. And I say, "Bravo, family and friends" and whoever keeps those potential recruits from being actual recruits. I don't think it unpatriotic to oppose this war or this presideny. In fact, it is the height of patriotism to want to strengthen your nation by not allowing your government to wantonly disregard the lives of its people or international law. It is the height of patriotism to not want to die on some imperialistic crusade hatched by a megalomaniacal corporate puppet and fool. There is no patriotic act in dying for an unjust cause, nor in allowing our children and friends to die...

Saul_Relative, I think that scoop has made a point there about parents. As a grandparent of seven grandsons between the ages of 13 and 19, my heart sinks when I hear any of them show the patriotism that I have always advocated. Though I do not express it to them, I surely do dread the idea of any of them taking part in what is going on these days in Iraq.

You and I, kingmi, I believe, agree on quite a few things, and some things
in varying degrees, and only a few things do we find outright disagreement (like the Bush impeachment deal). And I respect you for your beliefs, your ideals, your passions. If not for people like us, kingmi, this nation would either be one boring-ass place or totally oppressed (suppressed), or both. And if I wanted a yes-man, I'd alter my way of thinking and get one from Rush Limbaugh's audience or the Bush administration.

Saul I think the parents are having an effect on the young people and their
choice to enlist and with new questions about Iraq coming to light everyday it will only get worse. Think about it, recruiting has taken a dive in the last four months and from what the news reports show us and the climbing death rate do people expect it to get any better, I don't think so.

Glennb, You do not have to make all nice with me. Calling spin zone is OK.
I accept it.

Saul, I appreciate your point of view, which has a lot of thought and
substance to it. I can be swayed by rational thinking. But so far I have not been. I thank you for the headline and I thank you for not calling me names. I called GlennB a pig last night, and I apologized. No matter what he said to me, which was ignorant and based on a simple scan of the headline in a longer article I had written (two paragraphs -- might have been late). And I apologized to him. He later re-read the two paragraphs, saw what I was saying, and proceeded to attack me about a different point. Fair enough. I'll take that as an apology. I accept GlennB for what he is, the Village Idiot.
