best time
Definitly in the morning.
With a big cup of coffee, or upon witnessing some aspect of nature that blows me away. Much like the Monster Red Tail Hawk that lives in my woods. He takes flight from a local maple tree and soars with such elegance. It truly inspires me, when I hear him cry to his mate, it gives me chills to think how simple life really should be.
I have heard the reason people do there best work in the shower (or anywhere in or near water is do to the ion content in water, it's supposed to clear your mind.

Inspiration
For me, it's usually late at night but I get my best work done when I think I really don't have time to do it, or think I'm too tired to do it. Like the surrealists I do somethimes have to write a good deal of less good stuff to get to the gems but, wow, when the gems arrive they sparkle.

Location and emotion probably top the list for me. I've noticed a seasonal thing too - in winter, early mornings are a go, in the spring and summer, it's late at night.

i carry a notebook too.... (Backs of envelopes are pretty great too for those "need to write this NOW" types of moments....)
i feel most inspired late at night..... when sensual music is on..... during a rain storm....... and when i am emotional.

I write mostly in the morning. I am a morning person, but since I've begun Blogging I carry a speckled notebook and my Sony and a few of my favorite CD's in a big straw tote all the time. Just in case!
