I want to comment on all of these, but

to be honest, you all came away with the same thing I did.  It's a kind of shaking your head thing.  We get to people who can't SCUBA because of asthma, get a driver's license because they're blind, etc.  I'm not sure where the line is.  It seems to me if you are hindered from earning a living in a reasonable way given your limitations, as a society we have to figure out how to make it right for you.  The things they have implemented, in general, (ramps, allowing seeing eye dogs into various places) fall into the category of "no skin off my nose."  It doesn't impede others from carrying on their normal life.

There has to be a give and take, but there always has to be reason.  The deaf one blew my mind.  I would work with anyone any learn whatever I could to step into their world and make both of our lives better/co exist, etc.  Still, if I had the magical ability to take the ailment away from the person, I would do that first.  If my child were deaf, I certainly wouldn't be fighting for ways to keep him deaf.  My son had spinal meningitis as an infant, and there was a real concern he would have hearing problems.  He doesn't.  We would have dealt with it and got him through whatever he wanted to do if he ended up deaf, but you have to know I prayed many nights that he'd keep his hearing.  Why would ANYONE wish any kind of obstacle on another?  The deaf can ADAPT, absolutely, but that's what it is. The alternative presents more opportunities in this world.

Hmmm, every day I hear or read something that just makes me wonder...

I'm just waiting for the four horseman
It seems that people have become ridiculously self involved. I cannot believe someone who is deaf would be against helping another person hear. That is the height of callous narcissism. I am utterly speechless on that one. As for the woman who wants to get a nice view - give me her address, I'll send her a post card with some nice secenery. Besides... what, she can't take the chair lift up and ride it back down? Actually I'm just as speeachless on that one too.

I may sound cold hearted, but I honestly believe people like this need a good kick in the ass before they will realize that they are lucky to be alive in the first place. I've had glaucoma since I was a kid. I'm basically blind in my right eye - but I don't bitch about it. I don't sue book company's for using small print, I just read a little slower. What is so sad is that these people have amazing opportunites to expand human understanding. If they would only learn to become innovative and learn to solve problems in new ways, they would probably open up whole new methods of doing things. Many great inventions have come out of necessity.

But some people just want to be victims their whole lives I guess. So I'm just waiting for the apocolypse; 'cause sometimes I really think we deserve it :p.

On the second one, terpgirl, I'd scream an obscenity about what those
deaf morons were missing, but I don't like the sound of something they can't appreciate.
